OSU has asked the 3rd year students to design a system for the public that engages the idea of the “shared economy.”  The shared economy is a socio-economic system whereby consumers share in the creation, production, distribution, trade and consumption of goods, and services. This economic model has disrupted traditional industries such as taxi/car rentals, lodging/hotel/vacation, workspace, and lifestyles.

The goal of this project is to create a system or service that is to be shared.  Design will be used to tell a story and envision an experience with the shared economy, as well as identifying the process and user interaction with the system.

The problem of homelessness has long plagued our nation for centuries.  The existence of homelessness in the most powerful and wealthy countries on earth is a direct result of the choices that our society has made over time.  It is a systemic flaw that has reached levels we have not seen since The Great Depression.  Poor political decisions have allowed this issue to persist.  It is a result of inequitable policies, practices, and choices our society has made. Though the issue is existent on a societal level, many solutions are presented on an individualistic level.  Homelessness is not an individual failure– it is a societal failure– A flaw in the design of our nation’s system.

The “Housing First” approach “prioritizes providing permanent housing to people experiencing homelessness, thus ending their homelessness and serving as a platform from which they can pursue personal goals and improve their quality of life” (National Alliance to End Homelessness).

The nation has a system of temporary shelters that reaches 354,000 people on a given night. However, some still sleep in locations not ordinarily designated for that purpose (for example, sidewalks, subway trains, vehicles, or parks). Unsheltered people are considered particularly vulnerable due to their exposure to the elements and lack of safety, among other things.
